MUNICH, NOVEMBER 2024

At the End of the Year: Two Collections up for Auction at Hermann Historica

Anyone who thinks Hermann Historica is resting on its laurels after the triumph of the November auction is mistaken. On December 6, the auction house will present not one but two collections. At 10 am, the famous collection belonging to Oded and Tsipora Shermister of Tel Aviv will come under the hammer. Later, at 4 pm, a collection of Finnish and Japanese uniforms will be offered - only at Hermann Historica.

Collection of Oded and Tsipora Shermister

The internationally acclaimed collection comprises just under 400 unrivalled fine oriental arms, amassed with the utmost care and attesting to the couple's considerable expertise. From connoisseurs of superlative gold and silver-mounted weapons of courtly provenance to those preferring simple ethnographic pieces made by the tribes of South East Asia, art lovers and antique weapon collectors will be in seventh heaven. Of outstanding quality, the collection includes scores of rare and incomparable arms that are virtually impossible to find on the market.

First up, produced during the second half of the 18th century (lot number 10079), a deluxe miquelet rifle from Algeria deserves a special mention. Resplendent in red are the sparkling coral cabochons on the cock and two table-cut gemstones on the front. The masterpiece was made for the Algerian court. During the Ottoman rule, weapons of this kind were presented to western delegations by the Dey of Algiers as gifts of state. Bids from 10,000 euros are now invited for this magnificent firearm.

Another rare piece from India showcases the finest craftsmanship. Just the grip of the exceptionally opulent ayda katti, lot number 10168, is made of over 18-karat gold. Its catalogue price of 8,000 euros will soon be consigned to history.

Next up, the particularly fine kastane, lot number 10215, has also all but disappeared from the market. However, a bid of 10,000 euros will secure this magnum opus, a special type of sword from Sri Lanka, dating approximately from 1800, at Hermann Historica. The typical, short, slightly curved blade is embellished on both sides with floral, delicately chased gold mounts. The unusually ornate knuckle-bow hilt with its fully sculptured dragon's heads and the gilt silver scabbard enhance the exclusiveness of the piece.

Meanwhile, Hermann Historica presents the next in a veritable parade of highlights as lot number 10390. The daisho in handachi mounting was forged and signed by the bladesmith Tomomitsu during the late Edo period. This pair of traditional Japanese swords consists of a wakizashi (short sword) and a katana (long sword), both wrought with superior craftsmanship. Offers from 4,500 euros are now welcome.

Collection of Finnish and Japanese uniforms of World War II

Fans of military collectibles will be delighted about about this special auction. The approximately 175 items showcase the variety of service uniforms from World War II in Japan and Finland. Uniforms of all military ranks, from ordinary soldiers to high-ranking officers, will be offered on this Friday.

The Finnish uniforms reflect the history of the Finnish military from the 1920s to the 1940s. A particular highlight for militaria fans is lot 11019: starting from 400 euros, one can bid on an ensemble comprising a field cap, gas mask, and summer tunic of an air force lieutenant.

In the Japanese section, a highlight is the parade uniform of the Imperial Japanese Army (lot 11068), once belonging to Colonel Namba Nobunaga. It features striking yellow cuffs. Golden epaulettes, the parade sash, matching trousers, and a portrait photograph are included to the starting price of 1,000 euros.

A rare Kamikaze steel helmet (lot 11055) worn by the crew of Shinyo kamikaze boats in 1944/45 will also meet with approval. Such one-man motorboats were equipped with explosives and an impact detonator that would be ignited near the enemy's hull. The helmet was designed to protect the Shinyo crew from the anticipated heavy enemy fire directly before carrying out their suicide mission.Offers from 3,800 euros are now welcome.

These and all other masterpieces are illustrated in Hermann Historica 's online catalogues. Pre-sale bids can be submitted for all objects online. Moreover, buyers can inspect them in person during the pre-sale viewing in the auction rooms from 28 to 30 November 2024 and on 4 and 5 December 2024.
