The cover with an embossed national eagle in silver and the printed inscription "Deutsche Botschaft Washington". The inlaid card affixed with a bow in white silk. The card with Christmas and New Year's wishes in German "Die besten Wünsche zu Weihnachten und zum Neuen Jahr" and the signature "Hans Thomsen" (as well as for his wife) and the date "1940". Dimensions ca. 13x10cm. Hans Thomsen (1891 - 1968) entered the foreign service in 1919 and was stationed in Italy, returned to Germany in 1923 and served in the Foreign Ministry as well as in the Reichskanzlei. In 1936 he was sent to the German Embassy in Washington D.C. and became chargé d'affaires in 1938 until Germany's declaration of war against the United States on December 11, 1941.
