Beschreibung

Cavalry sabre M 1861. Fullered, single-edged blade of forged Damascus steel, three-quarters of the surface lavishly gilt on a blued background. The names of twelve graduates of the officers' school, most with the rank of lieutenant, engraved between fine leafy vines on the obverse. Fine trophy and leaf decoration on the reverse. The double-edged point with a beautiful Damascus pattern. The ricasso with the maker's mark "Weyersberg & Stamm Solingen" plus the inscription "Eisenhauer" and the supplier's stamp "Carl Grasser Waffenfabrik Wien". The nickel-plated (partly abraded) hilt with a fish-scale grip and wire winding. The scabbard in regulation issue, a decorative element ("S"?) as a seal engraved on the pommel cap. Presented in the custom-made, leather-covered wooden case (defects, knocked) with brass fittings, a brass plaque with blackened inscription "Brigade Offiziers Schule Tarnopol 1890/91" on the lid. The interior lined in yellow and blue velvet. Overall length of the sword, including scabbard 99 cm. Dimensions of the case 105 x 19 x 7.5 cm. Established in 1876, the royal-imperial 15th Cavalry Brigade was stationed in Tarnopol from 1888 onwards. The magnificent sabre is probably a farewell gift to the brigade commander from the mostly aristocratic graduates of the 1890/91 class at the Tarnopol Officers' School.
