Description
Gouache on paper, signed "Chr. Sell" at the lower left. Two field-grey medics with a stretcher are shown rushing to the aid of a wounded soldier from the Austro-Hungarian (k.u.k.) mounted field artillery; his fallen horse and other field artillerymen - both mounted and with a team—appear in the background. Framed under glass in a wooden frame featuring partial ebonizing and walnut veneer, accented by a gilded decorative molding. A nameplate reading "Christian Sell" is affixed to the bottom edge, though it bears the dates of life of his father, Christian Sell the Elder. Image dimensions approx. 23 x 31 cm; frame dimensions 42.5 x 50 cm. A dramatic scene featuring a rare depiction of medics, likely dating to the beginning of World War I. Like his father, Christian Jacob Sell (1831–1883), Christian Wilhelm Sell was a military and battle painter associated with the Düsseldorf School.Condition: II Questions about the lot?
