Works of Art, Antiquities & Ancient Art | A109kua | Live auction | 1190 Lots
Description
Two circular bronze phalerae, each with a central boss, divided outwards by two steps into three concentric, smooth zones, the inner ones broad, the outer one narrow. Each with one inner attachment element (rivet or retaining pin) at the border of the central boss, two further ones with narrow Iron bands immediately at the border. Both discs with extensive malachite patina, reddish-brown oxide deposits and incrustations. Minimal rim chips. Diameter 18.5 cm each. A typological interpretation as components of a disc cuirass of the type of the Old Italic kardiophylakes (cf. Warrior of Capestrano, Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo) merits consideration. CULTURAL ASSET!Provenance: Private collection in France. Acquired from Hermann Historica, Munich, 22 April 2009, Auction 57, Lot 303 (together with four other phalerae). Axel Guttmann Collection (1944–2001).
