Description
Large urn articulated in two “tiers”, a ceramic form in the tradition of the Urnfield culture. Flat base 10 cm wide, above it the slightly tapering foot. From there the wall swings out into a belly which, after a gentle break, tapers towards the shoulder (first tier). Above it a clearly offset, high, conically tapering neck with a slightly curved wall that tapers again towards the border (second tier). The vessel is finished with a funnel-shaped border with outwardly splayed lips. At the break of the belly on one side, a horizontal handle of circular section, angled slightly upwards. The foot and lower belly undecorated. Around the curve of the belly, five rectangular metopes of identical design: framed on the outside by bands of several parallel lines, varying in number from four to seven. Over these frames at regular intervals stamps with six points set diagonally to the direction of the lines. Inside, a further frame of four to five lines enclosing swastikas composed of parallel lines. At the bottom of the neck a horizontal band of five lines; in the upper half below the funnel border, two such bands of five lines. Below these, along the lower border, triangles of large dots hanging downwards, with between them a repeat pattern of doubly angled, interlocking but unconnected band segments of three lines, overstamped with diagonally running almond-shaped punches. The urn reassembled from several sherds with no missing sections. Light incrustations. Height 36.5 cm. Wide 28 cm. CULTURAL ASSET!Provenance: A private collection from Upper Austria (estate), acquired by the father in the 1980s on the art market in Austria and southern Germany.
