Description

Wheel-thrown vessel of light-ground clay, painted in sienna brown. Double-conical body with a soft carination, above which a large, wide-flaring funnel-shaped border with minimally everted lips. On the shoulder, two opposing vertical, bow-shaped handles, round in section. At the same height between the handles, two vertical, rounded-top projections. Inside the funnel-shaped border, around the mouth of the vessel, three concentric rings, above which five arc-line segments extending from the border to the outer ring. Handles and projections decorated with lines. The body painted in four horizontal zones: at the bottom two horizontal bands, from the lower of which four triangles hang with their points downwards. Above, two horizontal bands, divided in metope fashion by groups of three vertical strokes. Between the handles and the projections, square metopes with crosses of dots. Finishing with two wide horizontal bands. Apart from minimal knocks, small chips and slight incrustations, a completely intact and very attractive example. Height 25.8 cm. Width 28 cm. CULTURAL ASSET!

Provenance: Private collection from southern Germany (acquired from an estate), purchased by my father on 17 March 1984 from "Antik-Handel Wolfgang Hettgen" in Essen.
