Description
Impressively stylised, archaic votive head in light, reddish-brown clay. Bald-headed men on a slightly conically tapering neck. The anatomical details such as mouth, nose, eyes with eyelids and brow arches, as well as ears, all precisely elaborated yet adhering to a certain schematism that lends the face a mask-like appearance. The almost life-size head is a masterpiece in excellent preservation, showing only minimal chips along the lower border. Heads of this type were used as covers for urns or as votive heads in sanctuaries. Height 21 cm. A thermoluminescence analysis carried out in 1994 confirms the age of the votive head. CULTURAL ASSET!Provenance: A private collection from Upper Austria (estate), acquired by the father in the 1980s on the art market in Austria and southern Germany.
