Description
Mixed media on paper. Half-length portrait in general's uniform, the gold-braided collar bearing the two silver stars of a Lieutenant Field Marshal, gold sash, four decorations on the ribbon bar, his general's hat set down at left. Signed and dated in pencil lower right, "Friedberg / A. 5[1]". Old handwritten inscription in ink to the reverse naming the sitter, with a passage on the defection of the Normann brigade in 1813. The artist has not been identified with certainty; a plausible candidate is Emanuel Salomon von Friedberg, later Friedberg-Mírohorský (1829–1908), an officer and watercolourist active in Hungary during these years. Paper toned, extensive water staining, foxing, losses to the pigment particularly in the lower half, frame chipped with losses. Visible size 40.5 x 30.5 cm, frame 53 x 43 cm.Condition: III Questions about the lot?
