Description
Beech wood, carved and gilt, ebonised frame corpus; marble top. The fully sculptured eagle as the central support in the style of William Kent; from the front, the eagle with outstretched wings on a dark-painted rock base; rectangular frame with ebonised base and gilt carved ornamentation – egg-and-dart profile, openwork acanthus tendrils-cartouche frieze with volute spirals, edged with a braided band frieze, the corners with bead and reel ornaments; the light-coloured marble top with cloudy grey-brown veins mounted loosely. Areas of abrasion in the gilding of the head, neck, shoulders and talons, the chalk exposed. Two fine drying cracks in the neck/nape area. The marble top with a diagonal, slightly branched crack in the middle section. Dimensions 90 × 117 × 43 cm. As the main exponent of English Palladianism, William Kent (1685–1748), architect and furniture designer, had a formative influence on the eagle console table.
