Description
Veneered wood with gilt bronze appliqués and marble top. Conically tapering corpus with mirrored striped veneer in rectangular sections, on a three-sided, recessed plinth with short fluted feet. Front with appliqués in relief: a vase with floral garlands in an ornamental frame, below which a lyre with laurel branches. The upper section with a mascaron in a sun burst; garlands and leaf appliqués on the side. The plinth with appliquéd laurel wreath and bow at the front. Cover plate in light veined marble with a stepped profile and decorative gilt border. Veneer with small indentations and superficial scratches, the appliqués slightly abraded and with areas of patina, slight traces of use on the marble top. Dimensions 145 × 50 × 31 cm. Jean-Henri Riesener (Copenhagen 1734 – 1806 Paris) was a prominent Paris ébéniste during the late 18th century. He served as ébéniste to the court of Louis XVI, achieving renown for his furniture with lavish marquetry and gilt bronze appliqués.
