Description
Black and white, half-length portrait photograph of the brother of Ludwig II in Bavarian uniform with aiguillettes, his hair parted, his pensive gaze directed upwards. Under glass, in an exceptionally ornate, decorative gilt frame. The back with a wooden cover and a paper label reading "H.M.1869". Dimensions of the oval portrait 76 x 57 cm. Size of the frame 99 x 81 cm. Large-format photograph, probably taken by Joseph Albert (1825–1886), court photographer to the Bavarian royal family, who acquired a reputation for his subtle characterisation as the first Wittelsbach court photographer and whose work is thus on a par with Franz Xaver Winterhalter's paintings of nobility. Of the utmost rarity, formerly from the Wittelsbach estate.Provenance: Tegernsee Abbey
