Description

Oil on sheet copper, unsigned. Napoleon in conversation with two civilians, French generals and officers around the campfire at the right edge of the picture. French cavalry officers in the background on the left. Atmospheric scene amidst the mountainous landscape of the Somosierra Pass and under the overcast evening sky. The paint partially rubbed. In an old, gilt frame (worn in places) with punched decoration. Size of the picture 46.5 x 63.5 cm. Size of the frame 63 x 77.5 cm. After English troops landed in Portugal on 1 August 1808, Napoleon increased the military strength of the French army in Spain to 250,000 men and rushed to Spain himself to assume command on 8 November 1808. Napoleon drove the Spanish troops through the Sierra de Guadarrama. On 30 November, he won the Battle of Somosierra and occupied Madrid on 4 December 1808.
