Description

Oil on canvas and stretcher, signed at the lower right “Hans Bohrdt” with the location “Kullen”. A fine seascape with waves breaking along the coast in the foreground, with the deep sea—showing whitecaps and a sailing ship—beyond. On the horizon beneath an overcast sky, a large steamer, presumably a warship, is discernible. In a wooden frame. Size of the painting 39 x 58.5 cm, size of the frame 45 x 63.5 cm. Hans Bohrdt, a self-taught marine painter, found a great patron in Emperor Wilhelm II and was permitted to accompany him on numerous sea voyages. His best-known work “Der letzte Mann” depicts a sailor with the war ensign on the keel of the capsized SMS Leipzig moments before it sank.
