Orders and Military Collectibles until 1918 | A109m | Live auction | 1500 Lots
Description
Model 1868 helmet for infantry enlisted men, featuring a black lacquered leather body (showing craquelure, rubbing, and traces of clear lacquer) and brass fittings (with traces of gilding); the emblem—shaped as the crowned royal cipher “L”—is secured by leather wedges. The chin strap and cockade are missing; the black wool caterpillar crest shows areas of loss, and the laced black leather liner has minor losses and tears. The interior of the shell bears the stamped mark “1 L R / 3B / 1814”. Included is a second helmet with a rubbed, refinished surface; it lacks the crest and cockade, the emblem is mounted upside down, and it has a good leather-tab liner. Also included is a well-preserved black shako body featuring the original liner, black mohair covering, and leather top and visor, but lacking fittings. Items are partly incomplete and show slight damage, as well as signs of wear and age.Condition: III Questions about the lot?
