Description
Iron with bronze inlays. The folding frame made of flat bars, bound together at the middle, these with narrow slots at the top, bottom and on the sides. On each side of the top, there are three ring fittings (some damaged) to accommodate continuous iron bars to fasten the seat. On the outer sides and cross struts, largely preserved (partially rusted over) geometric decor made of inlaid bronze wires as well as dots and small squares. On the wider sections, the ornaments are mostly in rectangular frames but unframed on the narrower sections. At the intersection, the two folding frames are movably connected by a strong rivet, with a hemispherical head on the outside. The current leather cover is a modern replacement. The iron frame covered in reddish brown oxides, the inlays abraded in places and covered with oxide incrustation. However, the majority still clearly visible. Dimensions when folded: 61 x 41.5 cm. The "sella castrensis" follows the tradition of the ancient Italian commander's insignia. It was customary among military authorities. CULTURAL ASSETProvenance: From a private collection in France. Previously in the Axel Guttmann collection (prior to 2000).
