Description
A figural bronze axe blade depicting a dignitary wearing a headdress, holding a downward-pointing dagger with both hands bent in front of the chest. The same depiction on both sides of the axe. At the neck of the axe, the head of the dignitary with a flat, cap-like headdress, on which a Cross is incised. The shaft tube runs through the shoulder and chest. The blade flaring widely at the bottom, the blunt, unsharpened cutting edge slightly convex. A groove along each lateral blade edge. Below the dagger tip, two rows of rectangular bosses running transverse to the blade, presumably representing a belt of the garment symbolised by the smooth blade. Slightly rough surface with a reddish-brown oxide layer and isolated dark green spots. Length 12.7 cm. An exceptionally rare example of unique character. Comparable in the form of the axe with shaft tube and blade is a Hittite axe from Sarkisla. CULTURAL ASSET!Provenance: Northern German Private Collection.
