Description
Polychrome glazed ceramic, subsequently filled with concrete; a metal plate with a central aperture set into the fill on the underside. A male bust modelled in the round, the head and torso composed of sculpturally modelled grapes, gourds, further fruit, vegetables and foliage. A free three-dimensional interpretation of Arcimboldo’s composite heads as an Allegory of Autumn. Overall crazing to the glaze. Glaze flakes and losses to the polychrome decoration, particularly to the grape clusters. Several long, partly branching cracks in the ceramic body. Scratches, abrasions and dark surface deposits. Dimensions approximately 47.5 × 39 × 27 cm. The model belongs to a group of four busts, each dedicated to one of the seasons, commissioned by Christian Dior after Arcimboldo’s Four Seasons for a fashion presentation at the Grand Palais in Paris.
