Description

Bronze cast, brown Patina with greenish oxidation nuances; incised signature "Josef Pallenberg" on the front left plinth. Depicted is a red deer stag in characteristic rutting posture: head held high, open mouth, widely spreading antlers. The modelling impresses with pronounced neck musculature, taut stance and lively stepping position. Later mounted on a rectangular base of dark green-black veined marble. Surface with evenly aged Patina; light signs of use. Marble base with occasional fine scratches. Good overall condition. Dimensions of the bronze approx. 21 × 24.5 × 4 cm, with base approx. 23.5 × 28 × 8 cm. Josef Pallenberg ranks among the most important German animal sculptors of the early 20th century; his naturalistic sculptures of wild and zoo animals were created in close engagement with the animal collection of the Cologne Zoological Garden.
