Description
Curved marble plate with inlaid oval micromosaic medallions. Central medallion depicting a view of St. Peter’s Square, flanked by smaller medallions depicting Roman monuments, including the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Temple of Vesta, and the Roman Forum (some of which are idealized representations). The micromosaics, composed of finely cut tesserae (smalti and presumably natural stone), are characterized by precise placement and a balanced color scheme in shades of ochre, brown, green, and blue. The pictorial style follows the canon of so-called ‘pictorial perfection,’ characteristic of Roman micromosaic works from the late 18th to the mid-19th century and specifically developed for the Grand Tour market. Good overall condition. Age-related fine settling and minimal joint openings within the mosaics, with no major missing pieces. Backing plate with signs of wear, surface abrasion, and minor edge chips; overall harmonious patina of age. Dimensions 9.7 x 13.1 x 1.5 cm.Condition: I - Questions about the lot?
