Description

The plate made of staghorn and wood with ivory inlays. The centre with the depiction in relief of a warrior beheading his victim, a winged horse in the background. The border rising gently, embellished with alternate wood and ivory inlays. Engraved "O.G" and dated "1881". The broad edge with an ivory appliqué in high relief. A total of eight oval cartouches featuring highly detailed mythological tableaux. Grotesque figures, doves and bouquets of fruit in relief set between the cartouches. One small ivory part at the border is missing, otherwise only tiny losses and scratches. Overall in good condition. Diameter 29.5 cm Otto Glenz (1865 - 1948) attended the Academy of Art in Munich from 1884 to 1885. He established himself as an independent ivory carver and sculptor in Erbach in 1891. Since then he has been considered one of Erbach's finest ivory carvers. He was co-founder of the Odenwald School for Ivory Carving. Comes with a valid CITES certificate, dated June 2024.
