Description

Oil on canvas, unsigned. Bust-length portrait in officer's uniform in full regalia, the breast star of the Saxe-Ernestine House Order with Swords on his left breast. In an old decorative stucco frame (somewhat knocked), at the bottom an appliquéd brass plaque engraved „Herzog Joseph 1789 - 1868 / gemalt von H.J.Finke / Geschenk d. Herzogs Joseph a.d. Stadt 1843". Slightly damaged here and there, signs of age and use. Size of the painting 73 x 60 cm, size of the frame 103 x 83 cm. The Duke fought in the Wars of Liberation against France in 1814 and retired from active service as a major in the Uhlans Guard Regiment in 1816. In November 1849, he was appointed commander of the 19th Infantry Regiment and General der Infanterie on 31 May 1859.
