Description

Oil on canvas, signed at the bottom right and dated „Josephina ... de Gallemant 1830". Life-sized, half-length portrait of a French officer of the light cavalry in a dark green tunic with burgundy rabatt and piping, and silver epaulettes. The reversed royal cipher „C" on the silver bandolier, a white order cross with Bourbon fleurs-de-lys and red ribbon on his left breast. In a wooden moulded frame (small wormholes, the gold surface refreshed). Craquelure on the painted surface, the frame somewhat knocked, signs of age and handling. Size of the painting 73.5 x 60 cm, size of the frame 90 x 77 cm. Painted exceptionally realistically and in detail, a vivid composition. The artist Josephine Gallemant (1785 - 1836) was the daughter of the royal equerry Joseph Alexandre de Georges. Her godparents were none other than Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, who were represented at the baptism by the Duke of Fronsac and the Princess of Chimay. In 1816, she married her cousin, the officer Charles-Thérèse de Gallemant.
