Finely wrought neck cross in 18-carat gold (cross and crown), enamelled on both sides (minor chipping in places), movable crown riband buckle. Width 54.4 mm, weight 27.5 g. Black medal ribbon with buttons. Also includes the breast star in silver (tarnished), a wire pin on the hinge at the back, width 67 mm, weight 35 g. In the red presentation case (scuffed, one hinge plate loose at the back, white hinge ribbons torn) with gold-embossed decoration on the lid. Dark blue velvet underlay and white silk lining. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age and wear. Moreover, a handwritten postcard addressed to „Frau Landgerichtsdirektor Bunsen”, a relative of Robert Bunsen, dated 14 January 1896 (contents not related to the award). This decoration dated 1865 is mentioned on p. 242 in Georg Lockemann's 1949 biography of „Robert Wilhelm Bunsen. A copy of the relevant extract is enclosed with the lot.Provenance: Consigned directly from the family estate.
