The delicate order cross made of solid, 18-carat gold with red and white enamel (minor chipping in places), above which the monogram of Friedrich VII (1848 - 1863) with a crown in relief. On a short ribbon section (a longer ribbon enclosed separately). Signs of age and wear. Width 27.8 mm. Weight approx. 15 g. Also includes a handwritten letter addressed to „Mrs Julius Bunsen", a relative of Robert Bunsen, dated 12 August 1880 (contents not related to the award). This decoration dated 1856 is mentioned on p. 242 in Georg Lockemann's 1949 biography of „Robert Wilhelm Bunsen". A copy of the relevant extract is enclosed with the lot.Provenance: Consigned directly from the family estate.
