The beautifully preserved cross made of gold and enamel (minor chipping). The double-headed eagle and the maker's mark "IK" for Julius Keibel stamped under the enamel of the vertical cross arms, the loop stamped with the St. Petersburg mark of fineness for "56" zolotniki (14 carat gold). Width 49.5 mm, weight 20 g. Moreover, the breast star in silver, the front enamelled in red in the centre (chipped). The multi-piece medallion bearing the motto of the order "AMAN. JUST. PIET. FID". The master's mark "Keibel", the St. Petersburg mark of fineness for "84" zolotniki and the double-headed eagle stamped on the back. Diameter 90.5 mm. Weight 53 g. In the original, red leather presentation case (scuffed and cracked) with light-coloured velvet underlay (darkened). The Russian double-headed eagle embossed in gold on the lid. Comes with the sash 1st Class and neck ribbon (faded), both made of watered, ribbed silk. Also includes a handwritten letter addressed to "Herrn Obergerichts-Assessor Bunsen", a relative of Robert Bunsen, dated 17 January 1873 (contents not related to the award). This decoration dated 1886 is mentioned on p. 242 in Georg Lockemann's 1949 biography of "Robert Wilhelm Bunsen". A copy of the relevant extract is enclosed with the lot.Provenance: Consigned directly from the family estate.
