Cross in 14 carat gold and coloured enamel (a few minor chips in places). The loop of the cross with an illegible hallmark, „WK" for court jeweller Keibel and the Russian double-headed eagle stamped on the back of the cross arms. Width 45 mm, weight 20 g. Furthermore, a neck ribbon with buttons and a narrow ribbon section. In the original, red leather presentation case (scuffed, a small crack at the hinge) with light-coloured velvet underlay (darkened) and gold-embossed Cyrillic inscription on the lid. The paper label „J. W. Keibel à St. Petersbourg" on the base. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age and wear. Also includes a handwritten letter addressed to „Herrn Obergerichts-Assessor Bunsen", a relative of Robert Bunsen, dated February 2 1873 (contents not related to the award). This decoration dated 1861 is mentioned on p. 242 in Georg Lockemann's 1949 biography of „Robert Wilhelm Bunsen". A copy of the relevant extract is enclosed with the lot.Provenance: Consigned directly from the family estate.
