Bronze-coloured figure, presumably bronzed zinc casting or electroplated metal design, with an anchor and sail as iconographic attributes. Mounted on a rectangular metal plinth with additional black wooden stand. The back of the plinth stamped "Guss MARTIN & PILTZING. BERLIN. N."; the side signed and dated "L. Manzel. fec. 95". The standing female figure is dressed in antique-style robes with her arm outstretched; the anchor and sail refer to the allegorical figure of "Sedina", the patron saint of the port city of Stettin, who was created as part of Ludwig Manzel's fountain project following a competition in 1894. The dynamic drapery, idealised physiognomy and the serene, frontal composition correspond to the historicist formal language of the Berlin School of Sculpture circa 1900. Multi-stepped pedestal; the sail crafted separately and attached to the figure by means of wire. Surface abrasion, variation in the patina and verdigris formation in places; the sail with material fractures and cracks requiring restoration. Wooden stand with losses. Dimensions approx. 95 x 81 x 73 cm. Weight 52.98 kg. Ludwig Manzel was a professor at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin and is regarded as one of the exponents of monumental and allegory sculpture during the Wilhelminian era.
