A heavy military rapier by Wolfgang Stantler of Munich, circa 1600

Arms & Armour, and Antique Firearms | A108aw | Live auction | 1129 Lots

Description

Heavy, lightly conical tapering, double-edged blade of flattened diamond section. A „TS” mark below a crown stamped on the reverse of the ricasso. Iron knuckle-bow hilt of flattened bars. The fullered hilt with fine iron wire winding and Turk's heads. The pommel with lateral ridges and a distinct, riveted finial. Length 109 cm. The mark can very likely be attributed to the Munich swordsmith Wolfgang Stantler (1552 - 1617), who was documented in Munich. Typologically, this sword is closely related to the group of swords that were also made by Stantler for the Munich Town Guard, of which numerous examples are kept in the armoury there.
