Description

The broad, double-edged blade with a blunt point. Pitted in places, a large notch on one side. Shallow fullers on both sides of the upper root, struck with the signature "+ PETER + MUNCH +" and "+ IHN SOLINGEN 1664 +". A bishop's head mark stamped before each. Iron quillons, the ends extending into large finials. The arms slightly bent. Original octagonal grip with iron grip ferrule. Iron wire winding with Turk's heads. Onion-shaped pommel with offset riveted button. Original blackened leather scabbard with simple brass furniture, a rigid suspension ring on the side. Length 102 cm. Peter Munch was a famous Solingen bladesmith, active circa 1640-70, whose hallmark was a bishop's head.
