Description
Sturdy, double-edged blade circa 1550/60 with triple shallow fullers. Elaborate black-lead etching on both sides. On one side, within the fuller, multiple repetitions of the magic formula "ABRACUI" surrounded by scrolling bands and arabesques. At the root of the fuller, a barely legible etched inscription "AMSELV"(?) running transversely across the blade. On the opposite side, etched decorative tendrils on a fine stippled background. Straight iron quillons, the octagonal arms with fine finials. Conical tang, the octagonal, slightly fluted pommel with offset riveted button. The surfaces coated with heavily yellowed silicone for conservation reasons. Can easily be improved by cleaning. Length 121.5 cm. The length and form of the blade are atypical for an executioner's sword and correspond more closely to a contemporary battle sword. It is therefore likely that the blade was later re-purposed as an executioner's sword on account of its unusual inscription and mounted with this guard circa 1600–1650. The formula "ABRACUI" is presumably a version of the currently well-known "Abracadabra", a universal magic protective formula that has been in use since Late Antiquity.Condition: II - III Questions about the lot?
