Description
Oil on canvas. Genre scene depicting a dilapidated building against an expansive Italian landscape. A blacksmith's workshop can be seen to the right in the foreground, next to which travellers and horses at rest. In a 19th-century grooved, moulded frame. Size of the painting 60 x 76, including frame 75 x 88 cm. Also includes a copy of a black and white photograph with a handwritten note on the back by Dr. Erich von der Benken (1885-1942), former chief curator at the Alte Pinakotek in Munich, dated 8 July 1929, attributing the work to Philips Wouwerman personally. Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668), active in Haarlem, was one of the most diverse and prolific painters of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. He was known for his battle scenes, along with genre and landscape painting. He was also highly regarded for his representations of horses. The motif of a blacksmith in a ruined building appears frequently in different variations in his oeuvre. Similar paintings depicting this topic can be found in the holdings of the Wallace Collection in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Museum of fine arts in Leipzig.Provenance: From the estate of an old, noble South German family.
