Oil on oak wood. On the left in the foreground is a large pine tree, below which a farmer at rest, gazing at an inlet with a fishing boat. In the background a farmyard can be seen amidst leafy trees. The towers of a large town are visible on the horizon. Signed "EVERDINGEN 1660" at the bottom left. In a grooved, moulded frame, circa 1900. Size of the painting 48 x 65, including frame 64 x 81 cm. Alart von Everdingen (1621 - 1675) was a landscape painter. He studied with Roelandt Savery in Utrecht and was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1645. In 1657, Everdingen moved to Amsterdam, where he died in November 1675. Also included is the copy of an old black and white photograph with a handwritten expert report by Dr. Ernst Buchner, at the time director of the Wallraf-Richatz-Museum in Cologne.Provenance: From the estate of a old, noble South German family. Formerly in the auction on 29 and 30 October 1888 at Heberle in Cologne, lot number 28, and illustrated in the catalogue.
