High-quality copy of a silver ‘trefoil fibula’ with Mammen-style decoration (Viking, mid-10th to early 11th century) from the late 19th century

Description
Three-armed fibula with a knot in the centre, encircled by a wickerwork ornament consisting of three identically designed motifs in the three arms. A stylised human figure in the centre, its head resting directly on its breast. The left leg coiled in a spiral, the right straight. The arms extending to the left and right into a complex knotted wickerwork pattern. A notched band along the edge. Remnants of gilding on the surface. An iron pin in a silver loop hinge, opposite the pin holder on the back. A silver eyelet at the bottom, also containing iron oxides, presumably from a small ring. Intact. Incrustations and scratches on the surface. Dimensions: 7.4 x 7.4 cm, Weight: 85,71 gr. The results of an X-ray fluorescence analysis of the alloy suggest that it is not of ancient origin, but rather a 19th-century copy from an older collection.Provenance: South German private collection, inherited from the consignor's father in the late 1990s.
