A Viking sword, iron with silver inlays, 9th – mid-10th century

Description
The sword with a 78 cm blade of Geibig III type, tapering slightly towards the point and cut with a broad, shallow fuller in the centre, ending well before the point. The hilt with pommel and quillons of Petersen H type. Solid, thick, bellied quillons, which is bevelled upwards and downwards starting from a medial ridge. The surface inlaid with a fine, striped pattern composed of vertical silver wires. Wide, upwardly tapering grip hinge, which runs through the quillons and is inserted into a two-tier pommel at the top. The lower part of the pommel constructed and inlaid to match the quillons. After a slit follows the upper section, which is triangular when viewed from above and rounded on the sides, likewise inlaid with vertical silver wires. Total length 93.5 cm. The blade heavily corroded and scarred with rust. The upper section fragile and cracked, with traces of an old repair/re-gluing. Apart from slight pitting, the quillons, pommel and inlays in excellent condition and of better iron substance, individual silver wires have been lost.
