Description
The double-edged blade of lenticular cross-section, with a short point. Lavishly decorated on both sides of the upper half with etchings of the Savoy cross above a heraldic eagle, surmounted by a crown. The French fleur-de-lys coat of arms with a crown on the opposite side, below which a double-headed eagle. Original, leather-covered ricasso. Two guard thorns etched with decorative tendrils on the side, angled slightly toward the blade. The flat quillons with stippled ornamentation angled slightly toward the blade. Sturdy guard rings on both sides. Original grip with black leather cover and remnants of the lanyard. Two iron reinforcement bars of later date on the side of the lower half. Slightly conical, octagonal pommel with punched décor. Length 157 cm. The use of the Savoy coat of arms together with the coat of arms of France suggests that this weapon had a close association with the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis, which was signed in 1559, and the marriage of Emanuel Philibert of Savoy with Princess Margarethe of France.Condition: II Questions about the lot?
