Description
Oil on canvas, depicting a squad of faceless German soldiers in field-grey uniforms on their way to the front. In the background, the war-ravaged landscape of the Western Front lies beneath a grey evening sky. Signed “H. Schnürpel” at the bottom right. (On the reverse, the stretcher bears an adhesive label from the Bruno Wenzel art dealership in Breslau, with the handwritten title “Nach vorn” [To the Front].) Housed in a damaged gilt frame measuring 92 x 132 cm. Herbert Schnürpel (Berlin 1890 – Brussels 1943) was represented by 18 paintings at the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich between 1938 and 1943. Hitler acquired several of his works, including “Abgelöst” (Relieved)—also a scene depicting marching soldiers on the Flanders front—which serves as the counterpart to this painting.Condition: II Questions about the lot?
