Description
Oil on wood, signed “J. Hilz” at the lower left. In a dark farmhouse parlor, a grandmother sits beside her grandchild's typical Alpine-style cradle; rays of light stream in through the window from the right, and a stove is visible in the background. Image dimensions: 22 x 18 cm. Framed under glass in a gilded wooden frame (dimensions: 30.5 x 26.5 cm), with a plaque screwed to the bottom edge reading “Sepp Hilz - Wiege” (Cradle). Sepp Hilz trained as a painter in Rosenheim and studied from 1921 to 1927 at the School of Applied Arts in Munich and at the private school of Moritz Heymann. His rural and peasant-themed painting style made him one of the most popular artists of the Third Reich. Between 1938 and 1944, he was represented by a total of 28 works at the Great German Art Exhibitions; Hitler alone acquired 14 of his pieces there, while Goebbels and Adolf Wagner purchased three more, and Göring acquired two.Condition: II Questions about the lot?
