Description

Oil on wood, signed "Perboyre" at the lower right. Depicts light French cavalry in green uniforms and black shakos in a forest; in the foreground, a horseman is aiming his carbine. Housed in a gilded frame with rich relief ornamentation (showing nicks/abrasions; backing partially re-glued). Signs of age and use. Image dimensions: 35 x 27 cm; framed dimensions: 50 x 42 cm. A masterful painting, highly impressive in character. Perboyre studied in Paris under Bonnat and focused primarily on military subjects (Thieme/Becker, Vol. XXVI, p. 395).
