Description

Oil on wood, signed "Perboyre" at the lower left. Heavy cavalry of the First Empire Carabiniers in the field, wearing yellow cuirasses and led by an officer, shown prior to a skirmish. Housed in a gilded, richly relief-decorated profile frame (with some nicks/wear). Shows signs of age and use. Image dimensions: 35 x 27 cm; framed dimensions: 50 x 42 cm. A masterful painting, highly impressive in character. Perboyre studied in Paris under Bonnat and focused primarily on military subjects (Thieme/Becker, Vol. XXVI, p. 395).
