Description
Phalerae in the shape of two large tutuli. The exterior features a flat rim approximately 1.6 cm wide, decorated all around with a circularly arranged row of bosses framed by two lines of dot punches. In the centre, above a short, slightly sloped wall, a conical projection terminating in a spool-shaped decorative knob with a small cone as head. Below the decorative knob, one phalera retains the suspension loop for attachment to a backing. On the cones, a Cross with broad arms, bordered on the sides by a row of dot punches. A similar row of dot punches runs around the border of the cone. On the ends of the cross arms and in the angles between them, one boss each. Dark brown surface with greenish oxidation spots. Minimal nicks on the borders, otherwise in excellent condition. Two magnificent examples of Urnfield period craftsmanship with the typical dot-and-boss decoration, probably ornaments on horse harness. Diameter 8 cm and 8.3 cm. CULTURAL ASSET!Provenance: A private collection from southern Germany, acquired at the beginning of the millennium from his father, who passed away in 2013.
