Description
1) Axe with blunt neck and slightly convex sides, widening minimally towards the rounded cutting edge. Slightly rough surface typical of copper alloys, with a thin green oxide layer over a reddish-brown Patina. Two scratches on one side. Length 18 cm. Maximum height 4.7 cm. Maximum thickness 2 cm. 2) Axe with blunt neck and slightly convex sides, widening considerably towards the rounded cutting edge and flaring outward at the corners of the cutting edge. The blunt neck almost rectangularly offset and only 2 cm wide; the cutting edge 6.5 cm. Greenish-brown, slightly mottled Patina with minimal encrustations. Length 18.2 cm. Maximum thickness 1.5 cm. While the first example still closely follows stone axes as an example in its form, the second example already represents an advanced stage of development, exploiting the design possibilities of the new material — among other things, in a more material-efficient manner — while retaining functionality. The considerably wider cutting edge fully withstands the stresses imposed despite reduced material use and overall weight, and the axe is at the same time more easily hafted. CULTURAL ASSET!Provenance: A private collection from southern Germany, acquired at the beginning of the millennium from his father, who passed away in 2013.
