Description

Pen and ink drawing on paper. Estate stamp lower left; verso identical estate stamp. Executed in a confident, spontaneous line with varying pen pressure and dense hatching bundles for volumetric modelling, the sheet depicts a rutting red deer stag in the centre of the composition – head outstretched, mouth open – with a hind stepping aside behind a tree trunk that falls diagonally into the picture on the right; a group of trees frames the scene on the left. Isolated brownish foxing spots in the upper third of the sheet as well as a larger spot upper right; overall yellowing. Frame with loss to the top covering layer. Image dimensions 19.3 × 27.3 cm, frame dimensions 39.7 × 47 cm.
