Description

Oil on panel. A raised, bird's-eye view over closely packed rooftops, a large domed structure with lantern silhouetted in the background. Thickly impasted, broadly handled paint, most notably in the sky, with pronounced, visible brushwork. Verso, apparently in a later/other hand: "A view over Rome — sketch in oils. By Albert Sterner," together with a dedicatory inscription. Scattered paint losses to two areas of the sky, with a small scratch to the paint surface near the left edge; two splits to the panel at the right edge, with a further, smaller split near the left edge. Panel size 15.8 x 26.8 cm, frame size 29.4 x 39.7 x 5.5 cm. Sterner was a British-American painter, printmaker and illustrator, noted among other things as a portraitist to families such as the Vanderbilts and Whitneys, and as a founding member and later President of the Society of Illustrators.
