Description
Oil on board. Bears signature lower right "H.BASEDOW.". Inscribed to the reverse of the support in pencil "Herbstabend in Sanssouci" and "H. Basedow. Potsdam", beneath in red crayon "No 94". View from the south across the fountain basin towards the vineyard terraces and Sanssouci Palace; autumnal groups of trees to either side, balustrade with two marble figures to the foreground. Isolated losses to the paint layer down to the support. Losses to the paint along all four edges within the rebate. Overall surface dirt. Reverse of the support browned, with isolated brown spots; mounted with paper strips along the rebate edges, with adhesive residues and whitish efflorescence (later intervention). Moulded frame with metal leaf, abrasion and losses to the finish. Dimensions 24 × 29.5 cm, frame 30 × 36 cm. Basedow the Elder studied under Eugen Bracht and Gustav Schönleber and lived in Potsdam from 1900.353545
