Description

Large carved wooden binder. In the center a depiction of Germania wearing an armor and a winged helmet and with a sword and laurel wreath in her right hand. The frame with four steel rosettes in the corners surrounded by raised oak leave décor, surmounted by "Otto v. Bismarck" in a cartouche and flanked by "1815" and "1895" resp. The interior lined with brown damask silk. Enclosed on a black-white-red cord is a double-sheet document with a calligraphic birthday dedication to Bismarck in black and red ink, dated "1. Ostermond 1895/2008" (Ostermond is an old Germanic name for April) and with a stamp of the Association of the Germanic League in Vienna's 18th district. The second page with another calligraphic dedication in black and red ink explaining that among the number of Germanic Well-wishers the ones of the "Ostmarkstämme" (Ostmark tribes) must not be missing. Again dated as on the first page and with six ink signatures of the committee of the Ottonian Association. Dimensions of the binder 52 x 45 cm, of the document 50 x 39 cm. The difference of 113 years between the date of 1895 and 2008 derives from the famous Battle of Noreia in 113 B.C. in which the Germanic tribes of the Cimbri and Teutones defeated the Roman Army under Consul Gnaeus Papirius Carbo in Celtic lands (now Austria and north-eastern Italy).
