Cal. .44(BlackPowder), SN. 537, matching numbers. Barrel length 7½", the bore a bit frosted. SA. The top strap with maker's mark "Freeman's Pat Dec 9. 1862", "Hoard's Armory, Watertown , N.Y." and patent data. Patinated, with some remainders of bluing and colour case hardening. The smooth walnut grips with a few nicks and bottom corners chipped. Austin H. Freeman patented this model in 1862 and had 2000 units made at Hoard's Armory in Watertown, New York, in 1863/64. While a contract to supply 5000 units to the Ordnance department was ultimately not fulfilled, several states and private parties purchase the gun and used it widely during the civil war. Freeman's patent covers an interesting mechanism to rapidly remove cylinder and arbor pin by pushing a small switch forward. Overall length 32 cm.
