Description

Heavy, round plate in silver, the broad border exquisitely set with amber plaques and bars, arranged to form a ray pattern. The silver centre engraved with the dedication "Ehrenpreis des Reichsministers des Innern Dr. Frick für den Sieger des am 13. und 14. August 1938 im Olympia-Stadion zu Berlin ausgetragenen 1. Leichtathletik-Länderkampfes Deutschland - Amerika". The mark of fineness "835 S" stamped in the base, with a small plaque reading "Staatl. Bernstein Manufaktur Königsberg" and additional mark "Hergestellt in der Staat. Bernstein Manufaktur Königsberg Pr." Diameter 33.5 cm. Weight 1469 g. Small, superficial chips in the amber, otherwise in excellent condition. The Americans won 11 of the 12 running events in this first international athletics competition between the two countries. The German team were only successful in the 8 technical events, winning 5 medals for example in the javelin, discus and hammer. Overall, the Americans won the competition by 122 points to 92. The team captain was 42-year-old legendary track and field, football and basketball coach, Ward H. Haylett (1895 - 1990). From 1928 to 1963, he was a track and field coach at Kansas State University and produced athletes such as sprinter Thane Baker (the gold, silver and bronze medallist at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne). He was also one of the coaches of the US team at the 1948 Summer Olympics and was enshrined in the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. Also includes several newspaper cuttings (some original, some photocopied), such as (tr. ) "The captains of the athletics teams from the USA and Germany write to the 'B.Z. am Mittag':" (a Berlin newspaper) with Ward Haylett's words "The American Team is very happy to be in Berlin and we look forward to a fine meet."Or "Leave for Europe – Ward Haylett will hold training course in New York – [..] from where he will sail July 27 for Hamburg, Germany [..] with the United States track team which will compete against Germany August 13 and 14 in the Olympic stadium in Berlin."
