Description

Finely crafted pile carpet of the highest quality with 16 to 18 knots per square centimetre. Width of the carpet 515 cm, overall length 800 cm, with a semi-circular edge at one of the longer ends. Minor repairs, including a small water stain. The Reemtsma villa in Hamburg-Othmarschen was designed by architect Martin Elsaesser and built in 1930/31 at a cost of over 4.2 million Reichsmark. Measuring more than 1,700 m2, the villa was built on a plot of 64,000 qm2, in addition to a garden with horse pastures and riding garden and an outbuilding for employees. Only the best materials and state-of-the-art technology were used for the interior of the villa. This included wall tapestries by Richard Seewald and windows along the garden facade that could be completely recessed into the floor by means of 66 motors. This carpet was custom-made for the villa's fireplace room, where Reemtsma received important guests. From around 1938, Hermann Göring in particular became one of Reemtsma's most important contacts in the new government and was welcomed regularly at Villa Reemtsma. Comes with a photocopy of a letter from a textile restorer dated 1998, which highlights the high-quality production of the carpet, estimating the replacement value at DM 160,000. Moreover, a copy of a letter containing a brief history of the carpet. For many years, this carpet most recently adorned the reception hall of a major German collector. The carpet can be viewed in the Hamburg area by appointment only.
