Handwritten document in Latin, ink on parchment, dated „LUGDUNI BATAVORUM AD DIEM VIII FEBRUARII MDCCCLXXV" (Leiden, 8 February 1875). Rector and Senate hereby award „ROBERTUM GUILIELMUM BUNSEN" an honorary doctorate in medicine. After the date, the original signatures of the rector and his colleagues. A red wax seal in a brass box (the lid is loose in the frame) suspended on a peach-coloured silk ribbon. The seal features the crowned lion coat of arms and the name of the university inscribed around the edge in Latin. In a more recent wooden frame under glass. Size of the frame 55 x 65 x 6 cm. Slightly damaged here and there, signs of age and use. Very imposing certificate. „Lugdunum Batavorum" refers to the university in Leiden, the Netherlands, which was founded in 1575.Provenance: Consigned directly from the family estate.
